Luke completed his Bachelor of Science in Oenology and Viticulture at Curtin University in 2002 and soon after travelled to Europe and the US to gain some international wine making experience.
He returned after three years of travel and worked in several Western Australian wineries gaining winemaking experience before taking a winemaker position at Forest Hill Winery. This was followed by a winemaking position at Rockcliffe for 4 years and now based as chief winemaker for Plantagenet Wines in Mount Barker. A role Luke has had since 2016.
Luke has gained many accolades since embarking on his winemaking career. Luke’s knowledge and insight into premium boutique vineyards in the Great Southern wine region has given Rosenthal Wines fantastic fruit resources to work with. Luke believes a wine is born in the vineyard, in that its potential has already been predetermined by the time it reaches the winery. It is his task, as winemaker, to understand this potential and then, from the fruit selected, craft a wine which allows this potential to be truly expressed.
Coby Ladwig grew up in Denmark, Western Australia and was often seen as a youngster playing in the vineyards where his mother worked after school. This meant it was only a matter of time before Coby joined the wine industry. Following his graduation with Luke from Curtin University in 2002, he returned to his hometown with his sights set firmly on realising the potential of the Great Southern as a producer of outstanding wine.
Coby passionately believes that the cool climate of the region has the potential to make exceptional wines that can compete with the best in the world. He spent five years winemaking with West Cape Howe Wines before moving to Rockcliffe in 2007 where he was involved in designing and building the winery. 10 years later Coby now concentrates on the Rosenthal Wines brand which he and Luke took over in 2012. Coby is committed to the philosophy of identifying the best sites and sub-regions for each varietal to make exceptional single vineyard wines.
Coby was named as a finalist in the Wine Society’s Young Winemaker of the Year Awards and more recently as a Top 50 finalist for the Young Guns of Wine awards.
